Heat Pump vs Furnace: Which One Wins Down Here?

A furnace makes more sense the colder the climate gets, which around here means the mountains, not the Piedmont.

The short version, for a Southern winter
Here is the honest answer most national sites dance around: in Georgia and the Carolinas, a heat pump usually beats a gas furnace. Our winters are short and mild. A heat pump handles them fine, and it doubles as your air conditioner all summer, so you buy and maintain one system instead of two.
A furnace earns its keep where winters actually bite. Buffalo, Minneapolis, the mountains. Down in the Piedmont, where a hard freeze is a few nights and not a season, that gas burner sits idle most of the year while you still paid for it.
Atlanta sees around 50 nights below freezing in a normal year, and most of those only dip into the high 20s before the noon sun burns it off. Charlotte and the Triangle run similar. That matters, because the old knock on heat pumps, that they quit when it gets frigid, is a Northern problem. A modern heat pump holds its efficiency down into the 30s and 20s without blinking. We just don't get the deep, sustained cold that would hand the win to gas.

Read down that table and the pattern shows itself. The furnace only pulls ahead on the rows that assume a cold, long winter, and that is not the winter we get.
How a heat pump heats without burning anything
Quick mental model, because it trips people up. A furnace makes heat by burning gas. A heat pump doesn't make heat, it moves it. Even at 35ยฐF outside there is heat energy in the air, and the system pulls it indoors and concentrates it. It runs on electricity. No combustion, no flame, no gas line.
That's why the efficiency numbers look almost too good. A solid furnace turns most of its gas into heat and tops out around 95% AFUE. A heat pump can deliver two to three units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws, because it's moving heat rather than making it. In a mild winter, that gap lands right on your Georgia Power bill.
Most heat pumps down here ship with electric resistance strips for backup, and they kick in on the coldest mornings or during a defrost cycle. Those strips are expensive to run. If your installer sizes the system right and sets the balance point so the strips only engage when they truly must, you're fine. Set it wrong and you get a January bill spike that gives heat pumps a bad reputation they don't deserve. Ask about that balance-point setting before the crew leaves.
When a gas furnace still makes sense
I'm not going to pretend the answer is always heat pump. A furnace does win in a few real situations, even here.
- You already have gas and a newer AC. If your AC is only a few years old and the gas line works, replacing just the furnace beats ripping out everything for a heat pump.
- You're up in the mountains. The Blue Ridge, the North Georgia foothills, western North Carolina. Colder, longer winters tilt the math back toward gas, or at least toward a dual-fuel setup.
- Gas is cheap where you are and you heat hard. Keep the house at 72 all winter on a low gas rate and a furnace can cost less on the coldest stretches.
For most homes in metro Atlanta, Charlotte, Greenville, or Columbia, none of those hold. The heat pump is the better buy.

One more thing the tax law changed
If you were counting on a federal tax credit to sweeten a heat pump, that ship has sailed. The 25C credit expired for anything installed after December 31, 2025, so a 2026 install gets nothing from the feds. The full rundown is here. The better news: utility rebates stuck around.
