Furnace Filters: MERV Ratings, Sizes, and How Often to Actually Change One
A filter in the MERV 8–11 range is the right call for most homes with standard ductwork, changed every 1–3 months. Most builder-grade systems from Goodman, Rheem, or Payne cap out around MERV 8–11 on the filter their return duct was sized for — jamming a MERV 13 or higher into that system restricts airflow enough to freeze the evaporator coil in summer or overheat the heat exchanger in winter. Check your equipment's max rating before you upgrade, not after something breaks.

MERV ratings, explained without the jargon
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — higher number, finer particles caught, more resistance to airflow. Here's what each range actually means for a residential system:

The number on the box is a lab rating, not a recommendation for your specific furnace. Your equipment manual, or the sticker inside the filter cabinet door, tells you the actual ceiling.
Finding your filter size
Pull the old filter and look at the cardboard frame — the printed size, something like 16x25x1 or 20x20x1, is the nominal size, rounded to the nearest standard measurement. It's close but not always exact. If you've never checked, measure the actual opening with a tape measure: length, width, and depth, in that order. A filter that's a half-inch off in any dimension either won't seal properly or won't fit at all.
Most homes use a 1-inch filter that slides into a slot near the return duct or the furnace cabinet itself. Some systems, especially newer installs, use a 4- or 5-inch media cabinet instead — a deeper filter that catches more and needs changing far less often. The single easiest way to actually stick to a filter schedule is to buy a two-pack the first time and keep the spare in the same closet as the furnace. Brands like Filtrete, Honeywell, and FilterBuy all sell common sizes in multi-packs for barely more than one filter alone. When the old one comes out dirty, the new one is already three feet away instead of a store run away.
How often to actually change it
The 90-day rule printed on most filter boxes is a starting point, not a schedule. Real households vary a lot:

Here's the one we see most: someone reads that a higher MERV rating filters better, so they buy a MERV 13 for a system that was designed around MERV 8. The denser filter media restricts airflow, and a furnace starved of airflow runs hotter than it should. Check your equipment's rated maximum MERV before upgrading, and if your return ducts are older and undersized, staying in the 8–11 range is usually the safer call regardless of what the box promises.
What happens when you skip it
A filter left in too long doesn't fail quietly. Airflow drops, the blower works harder to push air through a clogged mat of dust, and the system starts short-cycling — turning off before it's actually satisfied a heat call, then turning back on a few minutes later.
